Leading with Kindness in Uncertain Times
Mar 25, 2025
Lately, it feels like uncertainty is everywhere. DEI programs are being rolled back, immigration enforcement is creating fear in communities, and for many people, the future feels shaky at best. You may not see it outright, but people around you—your colleagues, team members, even friends—are carrying a lot right now.
As leaders, we can’t control everything happening in the world, but we can control how we show up. And in times like these, small moments of kindness and connection matter more than ever.
At CATALYST, we believe leadership isn’t just about driving results—it’s about creating spaces where people feel valued, heard, and supported. Here’s how you can do that:
1️⃣ Go Beyond "How Are You?"
We’ve all asked it a thousand times: “How are you?” And we all know the default answer: “Good, you?” Instead, try: “Really, how are you?”—and then wait. Give the other person time to decide if they want to share. That small pause can be the difference between a surface-level exchange and a meaningful conversation.
2️⃣ Listen to Hear, Not to Fix
When someone opens up, resist the urge to jump in with advice or solutions. Instead, listen to understand. What’s the story behind the story? What’s being left unsaid? Sometimes, people don’t need you to fix anything—they just need to be heard.
3️⃣ Ask, "What Would Be Most Helpful Right Now?"
Notice the shift here—it’s not about what you can do, but about what they actually need. Maybe it’s support, maybe it’s space, or maybe it’s just knowing someone cares. This simple question puts the other person in control and shows that you’re there for them, not just to check a box.
We don’t need all the answers to be great leaders. We just need to be present, pay attention, and make space for the people around us. The best leaders don’t just drive business forward—they create environments where people feel seen, safe, and supported. And in times of uncertainty, that kind of leadership matters more than ever.
Let’s lead with kindness. It starts with a conversation.
